Memory Game Critique
Name: Mr. Manion
Name of brain game: Familiar Faces
Website where game was found: www.lumosity.com
What specific aspect of the brain did the game deal with: memory
Summary of Game:
The brain game I chose for my critique was Familiar Faces. This game put you behind the counter of a fast food shop taking orders. As you take orders, you are introduced to different pople. You are given the names of each person who comes to the counter and must recall those names later. In the meantime, you are given distractions that are intended to cause you to forget the names. For instance, you not only are trying to remember names, but also keep track of who ordered what food. You are given a score not only on remembering names, but on getting the correct orders to the correct people.
Usefulness of Game:
As someone who has a difficult time remembering names, I actually found this game useful. As I played the game, I found myself using association to keep track of the names. For instance, the name of one of the individuals in the game was John. I have a brother named John, so when I saw that person I looked for characteristics that would remind me of my brother. Another person in the game was named Charles. He was dressed kind of "cool" and I used an old television show "Charles in Charge" to remember the name. In that television show, Charles was kind of a "cool" character.
Game Rating:
I gave this game four stars out of five. When I first played the game, I didn't think it was that difficult, and I probably would have given it three stars. I found that if I made a decent effort of concentrating that I could remember the names fairly well. I also thought they could have thrown in more distractors. I walked away from the game thinking, "That wasn't that difficult." However, when I came back to play the game the following day, the game picked up where it left off, and I was expected to still remember all the names. I didn't remember a single one. The concept of short term vs. long term memory and the need for repitition over a number of days, not just one day, really hit home.
