Step 2: Review
Students will review the six different modes of documentaries and watch short documentaries from each mode. From these examples, students will have a better understanding of the purpose behind documentary films and how the style of documentary films are different from other film styles. If you miss class or would like a review/study guide, click on the link to the right. It will provide you with a study guide of necessary information.

Access my Example Short Documentaries Page. Then choose a documentary and write an essay that answers some basic questions about that documentary. I have provided an example of both a documentary and its accompanying essay at the following link: Documentary Essay Example
Step 4: Documentary Film
Create a documentary that uses one of the four modes: Expository, Performative, Reflexive, or Participatory. The four steps to completing this project is contained in the four headers below written in red.

Students will come up with an idea for their own short documentary film that will be 3-5 minutes in length. Once you come up with a strong documentary idea, you will need to complete the Documentary Film Plan.

Filming
Once the storyboard is completed, students are ready to begin filming. Much of this work will be done outside of class time. Students may check out classroom camcorders as needed.

Editing
Students will take their film footage and import it to WeVideo where they will need to edit the footage, add title slides, effects, and audio.

Sharing
Students will export their video to present to the class, where it will be critiqued by both their peers and the teacher.

Documentary Due Dates:
March 31 - Documentary Essay Completed March 31 - Final Documentary Idea Chosen April 16 - Filled Out Documentary Film Plan May 7 - All Documentary Footage Filmed May 14 - Documentary Film Completed Note: The Documentary Essay due March 31 and the Documentary Film due May 14, are two completely different projects. Please do not confuse the two. |
